A classic VW bus parked along Northern California's Pacific Ocean
Coastal Highway near Salmon Creek, signals a popular surfing location.
I had to pull over and photograph this VW. It brought back a flood of memories.
We had one just like when I was growing up.

The camera at times has a great ability to hide reality. In this tranquil
scene, two men from the village of San Martin battle the powerful currents of the
Amazon on the Tipischa de Samiria in Peru. On assignment, we found ourselves
investigating three murders of local Park Rangers that had taken place only
two weeks earlier. The rangers had confiscated illegal nets being used on the
river to poach fish. The crime appeared retaliatory as they were murdered while
they sleep at the ranger station. The village was tense and uncooperative. As
we left I climbed on top our boat and caught a glimpse of these men
transporting their goods. The sun was setting, the warm glow magnificent. For just a
moment I was able to depart from the tensions at hand and paint with my lens.

While waiting for a ferry ride this cluster of colorful row boats
in Penobscot Bay, Maine begged to have a photograph created.

Making part of his living as a hat maker on the tiny Caribbean island of Nevis,
this man's beaming and contagious smile aptly reflects the kindness of the island people here.

Cast members from "Out of the Shadowlands" prepare for their parade
march in the annual Caribanna Parade in Toronto, Ontario.

While coveing as assignment on the Toronto Islands I came across a group of
folks aged between their teen years and seventies milling around a lonely
neighborhood dock. They were bike jumping into the lagoon that separates Ward's and
Algonquin Islands in the Tornoto Islands, Ontario. I wish I wasn't working at
the time. It looked like great fun.

A lone sunbather enjoys the soft turquoise surf of the Caribbean
on the island of Anguilla.

A hiker makes his way through the fine sandstone formations in the
Vermillion Cliffs region of the high Colorado Plateau.

The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is a fascinating place. Run-off waters from the local
geothermal plant collect from deep within the earth and are held in a lava field.
The blue-green algae and silica mud give the water its distinctive neon glow.

While covering a story on the history of sauna's our travels took us across
Finland where one out of every two homeowners has a sauna. I had heard of smoke
saunas but had yet to see one. In Lipen, Finland we came across a woman
stoking a smoke sauna. I had to laugh because it looked like the place was burning
down and she showed no concern at all. In the end, smoke sauna's became my
favorite type of sauna experience.

Just outside of downtown Helsinki is an area known as Lauttsaari. In the
summer months Finnish people take full advantage of the short warm season. I came
across this man on his lunch break sunning himself near the Baltic Sea. He
simply pulled up on his bike, took off his shirt and dropped his drawers down to
his ankles and proceeded to absorb the vitamins of sunshine.

Covering Jamaica has always been fun. The beaches with the beautiful women,
quaint resorts, and fabulous swimming holes are a vacationers and photographers
paradise. But, Jamaica has great mountains to explore too. Island life is
different in the hills where Blue Mountain Coffee is grown. Here, at the Good
Hope Great House in the Cockpit Mountains morning mist coats the lawn with fresh
dew. Somehow, it just didn't feel like Jamaica. I like stories like this. You
don't expect something and it thrills you.

Soldiers gather in Moscow's Red Square while a officers young daughter clings
to her dad amidst a sea of uniforms in a country on the verge of overwhelming
political change.

Before the fall of Russia's pre-glasnost political system, soldiers regularly
changed guard over Lenin's Tomb in Red Square. Thousands would stand in line
hours long to view the former leader's embalmed body on display. I was amazed
at the interest generated after all those years by the public. Russian women
watch proudly as guards perform their ritualized duties.
